Voyageur Wilderness

March 21st, 2023 | Sharing Circle

I am Michelle Savoie, and I live on Voyageur Island, in Quetico Provincial Park. We have located 194 km and a boat ride west of Thunder Bay. I am inspired by my Metis heritage. Voyageur Wilderness is a progressive yet traditional business, offering eco-based Interpretive and educational tours and accommodations in an incredibly beautiful natural landscape.

Voyageur Wilderness is recognized internationally and was founded in 1960. We’ve been attracting international visitors for years, and one of our important missions has always been to contribute to the local economy. In addition to tours and accommodation, we also offer visitors a chance to purchase local arts and crafts.

We wanted to become more resilient, so we applied for TRF funding to install communication infrastructure, improve our online marketing, and renovate existing buildings to offer a more comprehensive offering. We have added and/or updated our Indigenous culinary experiences, and the presentation of our storytelling and history, focused on how we live, work and play. Our website was revamped, we got Starlite access for internet and phone connectivity, and we upgraded our cottages, bought some culinary equipment and translated our website into French.

Our visitors connect in a deep and meaningful way to our remote natural landscape. The TRF improvements will dramatically improve our connectivity to the outside world and allow guests to reach their important contacts back home.

The enhanced culinary experiences will connect visitors to Indigenous cuisine, and the upgraded physical plant will allow Voyageur Wilderness an opportunity to compete better in a post-covid marketplace, where experiential, sustainable and cultural experiences are growing in popularity.
